WE ARE PART OF THE SILCHESTER COMMUNITY

Silcestre (xi cent.); Ciltestere, Cilcestre (xiii cent.); Scilchestre (xiv cent.); Sylkchester (xviii cent.).

We are proud to be part of our vibrant community, and our lineage goes back centuries - the most visible being our location in the Roman Town of Calleva Atrebatum. The story of that past can be found at  Silchester Roman City Walls and Amphitheatre and at Silchester Roman Town project.

We are integral to the community, providing religious services, community events, historical preservation, and tourism, while its outcomes include community cohesion, cultural enrichment, economic impact, emotional support, and volunteer opportunities. These contribute to the overall well-being, identity, and social fabric of our community.

  1. Religious Services: The church provides regular religious services, including Sunday worship, weddings, funerals, baptisms, and other ceremonies. These services offer spiritual guidance and support to the community, allowing individuals to practice their faith and connect with others in a meaningful way.
  2. Community Events: St. Mary the Virgin Church serves as a hub for various community events and activities. It may host concerts, art exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and social gatherings. These events foster a sense of community cohesion, provide cultural enrichment, and create opportunities for social interaction and engagement among residents.
  3. Historical and Cultural Preservation: The church itself is of significant historical and architectural importance. By preserving and maintaining this heritage site, the church contributes to the preservation of Silchester's history and cultural identity. It allows residents and visitors to appreciate and learn from the past, fostering a sense of pride and connection to the community's heritage.
  4. Tourism and Economic Impact: Silchester St. Mary the Virgin Church attracts tourists and visitors interested in its historical and architectural features. This influx of visitors can have positive economic effects on the local community. Visitors may spend money in local businesses, such as shops, restaurants, and accommodations, thus contributing to the local economy and supporting job creation.
  5. Spiritual and Emotional Support: The church offers a place of solace and support for individuals during times of personal crisis, grief, or spiritual seeking. The pastoral care provided by the church community can provide emotional support, counselling, and guidance to those in need. This support system can strengthen the overall well-being and resilience of the community.
  6. Volunteer Opportunities: Churches often offer volunteer programs and opportunities for community members to get involved. These programs may include charitable initiatives, community outreach, youth programs, or assistance for the vulnerable. By volunteering at the church, community members can make a positive impact on the lives of others and contribute to the betterment of the community as a whole.
